Many aspects of our daily lives have changed since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. One of those changes has been the amount of time we spend on our phones and in front of our computer screens. Now many people are questioning the negative effects of blue light emitted from these devices and its potential dangers. What we do know is that the main source of blue light is actually the sun, which we know can be harmful to our skin. The question is, does blue light have a similar damaging effect to our skin and body as UVA/UVB rays? Let’s see what the scientists have to say.
What is Blue Light?
Blue light is visible light between the wavelengths of 400 to 500 nanometers. In simple terms, energy emitted from the sun is categorized on a spectrum of different rays depending on its wavelength. Visible light is all the light that we can see and has wavelengths between 380 and 780 nanometers.
According to a study performed at the Nippon School of Medicine, blue light contributes to skin aging similar to the sun’s UVA rays. The study showed that blue light induced oxidative stress to the skin cells, specifically to the mitochondria. This oxidative stress can show up as signs of aging and carcinogenesis.
An article published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reported that blue light can be both harmful and beneficial to the skin. Its effect depends on the intensity and wavelength of the blue light. Studies have revealed that longer exposure to high-energy blue light can increase the amount of DNA damage, cell and tissue death and injury, eye damage, skin barrier damage, and photoaging.
Studies also showed that blue light can cause hyperpigmentation and darkening of the skin, as well as reddening. These impacts on the skin from blue light are similar to the photoaging effects of UVA and UVB rays. This means that you need to protect your skin from not only the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, but the blue light as well.
However, studies have also found that when blue light of specific wavelengths is combined with LEVULAN® KERASTICK- aminolevulinic acid, it can be beneficial to the skin. This treatment is called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and can be used to remove actinic keratoses (AKs), which are precancerous cells found on the skin.
How to Prevent Blue Light Damage
One study concluded that products formulated with any of the following ingredients, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron oxides, demonstrated 71.9%-85.6% protection against blue light wavelengths. Also, sunscreens formulated with both iron oxides and zinc oxides provided enhanced protection against blue light. An extensive study on the hyperpigmentation and reddening effects of blue light reported that Niacinamide 3% was also an effective protection against the effects of blue light.
Protecting Your Skin Without Sacrificing Beauty
So, not only does a full spectrum mineral sunscreen protect your skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays, but it also protects your skin from the aging effects of blue light. However, to maintain full efficiency and protection, your sunscreen must be reapplied approximately every 2 hours. The problem then arises that if you apply your sunscreen underneath your foundation, how do you reapply it throughout the day without messing up your makeup?
The answer to that is easy— you use Susan Posnick’s COLORFLO foundation!
COLORFLO foundation is an easy, self-dispensing all-natural brush-on foundation that uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for safe and natural SPF protection.
